Mini Session

Why choosing a dog photographer matters more than you think

One thing I hear from clients again and again is this:

"We booked a photo session with our dog before, but the photographer didn't really know how to work with them."

Maybe they didn't know how to get the dog's attention. Maybe they kept asking for poses that made the dog uncomfortable. Or maybe they didn't recognize the subtle signs that the dog had simply had enough.

The truth is, that's not necessarily a family photographer's job.

If a photographer primarily photographs families with young children, there's a good chance they're wonderful at directing people. They may even have dogs of their own and be comfortable around them. But photographing your relationship with your dog is a completely different experience. That's why finding someone who specializes in dog photography makes such a difference.

Why I chose to specialize in dog photography

A few years ago, choosing this niche felt a little scary. It meant saying no to other types of photography and trusting that there were enough people who wanted to celebrate the bond they share with their dogs.

Looking back now, I can't imagine doing anything else.

Being invited into these relationships is one of the greatest privileges of my work. I get to preserve memories that my clients will cherish for years, whether that's a framed print hanging in their home (and yes, I will always encourage you to print your photos!) or a favorite image that makes you smile every time you unlock your phone. Knowing I've helped create something that becomes part of your everyday life is incredibly meaningful to me.

Your dog is the star of the session

When you book a session with me, your dog isn't just tagging along. Your dog as well as the relationship you share are the entire reason we're there. That means everything we do is centered around your dog's comfort, personality, and pace.

Most dogs absolutely thrive during their sessions, but every dog is different. If your pup tells us they're finished, stressed, overwhelmed, or simply not having fun anymore, we stop. Their well-being will always come before getting "just one more photo." Throughout every session, we take plenty of breaks for sniffing, exploring, drinking water, and simply being a dog. I also won't ask you or your dog to do anything that isn't already natural for your relationship. There are no surprise poses or unrealistic expectations. If there's a trick or pose you'd love to include, I simply recommend practicing it together before your session so it feels fun and familiar. Thinking about bringing an adorable outfit? I love that! Just be sure your pup has worn it several times before our session so it feels comfortable instead of stressful.

Experience makes all the difference

This understanding of dog behavior is what sets a dedicated dog photographer apart. Knowing when a dog is engaged, when they need a break, or when they're finished isn't something you learn from posing people. It's something that comes from spending countless hours photographing dogs, learning their body language, and respecting what they're communicating. That creates a session that's relaxed, enjoyable, and genuinely reflects who your dog is. And honestly, those authentic moments are always my favorites.

Thinking about booking a session?

If you've been dreaming about professional photos with your dog, consider this your sign to stop waiting. And if you're worried your dog might not be up for a full-length session, my Mini Sessions on August 30 are a wonderful option. They're shorter, low-pressure, and perfect for dogs with shorter attention spans. I'll also be announcing additional mini session dates over the coming weeks.

If you'd like first access before they're released publicly, be sure to join my monthly newsletter.

I can't wait to meet you and your pup and help tell your story together.

A little magic with a girl and her puppy

There’s something timeless about the bond between a child and her puppy. And the best photos don’t come from posing. Simply letting these two be, watching them run, play and cuddle, sharing glances that say more than words ever could, turned into a quite magical 20-minute sessions.

“We had such a great experience with Elena! My 5 year old loved her, and felt very comfortable around her. Not to mention our 15 week puppy loved her. She got some amazing photos with two subjects who were always on the move. Our family will cherish these photos forever. Highly recommend Maas Creative!”

Mini Sessions are happening this Saturday

There are less than a handful of spots left for Saturday’s mini sessions (October only has one spot left). Yes, we will be able to create a little magic in 10 minutes with you and your pup.

Why you and your dog should sign up for a mini session

Let’s talk about mini sessions. These sessions are short, sweet, and full of real-life moments that matter most.

These aren’t the kind of sessions where everyone needs to be perfectly groomed, dressed up, or filtered into a version of themselves that doesn’t exist on a Tuesday afternoon. These are for you and your dog exactly as you are.

  • Bad haircut? Not a problem.

  • Just came from the vet with a bald spot? Honestly, that’s part of the story.

  • Dog rolled in wet grass on the way to the shoot? Good. That’s just how it is.

What I love most is capturing your bond, not your “look.” Your dog doesn’t care if your hair is messy or if their tail is a little wild today. What matters is you’re together, and that’s the heart of every photo.

These mini sessions are about freezing that feeling in time:

  • The way they lean into you.

  • The goofy grin after a zoom.

  • The everyday gear that years from now will bring you back to this exact season of life.

Photos don’t need to be perfect to be powerful. They just need to be true.

So if you’ve been thinking:

“We’re not ready…” or “Let’s wait until they’re groomed…”

Don’t wait. Life’s already happening. Your dog is already showing up just as they are. And I promise, that’s more than enough.

Let’s make some real, honest, joy-filled memories.
