Why it's okay if your dog isn’t perfect during their session

May 13, 2025 in Dog photography, Pet Photography, Photography

As a dog photographer, one of the most common things I hear before a session is:

"I’m not sure how this will go… my dog isn’t exactly the best behaved."

To that, I say ‘that is totally okay’

Whether your pup is wild with excitement, nervous around new people, or has a tendency to do their own thing… that’s okay. In fact, it’s more than okay. It’s real. And real is what I love to photograph most.

You don’t need a perfectly trained pup to get beautiful photos. Some of my favorite images have come from the unexpected, the head tilts, the zoomies, the slightly-too-long snuggles, or the moments when a dog refuses to look at the camera and instead looks lovingly at you.

Your dog’s quirks are what make them unique. That headstrong streak? That goofy grin when they flop over mid-pose? That’s them. And that’s what you’ll want to remember years from now.

I’ve worked with dogs who:

  • Barked the entire session

  • Wouldn’t sit still for more than two seconds

  • Had no interest in treats or toys

  • Rolled in the grass mid-shot (and stayed there)

  • Took time to warm up and just wanted to observe

And you know what? We still made magic. Every dog brings something different, and I adapt to what they need. Whether it means moving slower, taking breaks, or following their lead instead of mine, I’m here for all of it.

You Know Your Dog Best

Before your session, I’ll ask questions about your dog’s personality, preferences, and triggers. You don’t have to have all the answers, but your insight helps me make sure the session is as stress-free as possible, for both of you.

We’ll go with the flow, let your dog guide us, and give them the time and space they need to feel comfortable. The goal is to capture them just as they are, with all the joy, love, and personality that makes them your best friend.

It’s About Real Connection

What matters most isn’t whether your dog ‘performs.’ It’s that we capture the bond between you. That tail-wagging enthusiasm when they see you. The way they lean into your side. The comfort they find in your presence.

Those moments? They’re what make the session unforgettable.

So if you're worried your dog won’t sit, stay, or cooperate, please don’t be. I welcome the chaos. I embrace the quirks. And I promise, your dog is already perfect in the only way that matters: they’re yours.

Let’s tell their story, exactly as it is.
